A versatile home-style prawn curry enjoyed across many regions of India, featuring tomatoes, onions, and warming spices.

Ingredients

  • Tiger prawns, 500 g

  • Onion, finely chopped, 250 g

  • Tomato, finely chopped, 250 g

  • Ginger paste, 1 tsp

  • Garlic paste, 1 tsp

  • Turmeric powder, 1/2 tsp

  • Salt, 1/2 tsp (or to taste)

  • Red chili powder, 1 tsp

  • Coriander seed paste, 1 tsp

  • Cumin paste, 1 tsp

  • Cumin seeds, 1 tsp

  • Kashmiri red chili powder, 1 tsp

  • Cooking oil, 3–4 tsp

  • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped, 2 tsp

Directions

  • Clean and wash the prawns thoroughly.
  • Chop onions and tomatoes finely.
  • In a bowl, mix ginger paste, garlic paste, coriander paste, cumin paste, and powdered spices.
  • Heat oil in a pan. Add cumin seeds and let them splutter.
  • Add onions and tomatoes and sauté until softened.
  • Add the spice mixture with a little water and cook until oil separates.
  • Add prawns, stir well, and pour in 1 cup of water. Simmer until the gravy thickens.
  • Turn off the heat and mix in chopped coriander leaves.
